You Are Here

Jealous East

22 Oct 2020 — 01 Nov 2020

After a hugely successful few weeks at our Crouch End gallery, Jealous East welcomes Dave Buonaguidi’s ‘You Are Here’ solo show into Shoreditch! The exhibition will feature a new selection of the artist’s cartographical curiosities, with carefully procured locations from across the world to spark your wanderlust.

BUONAGUIDI’S MAPS ACT AS AN EFFICACIOUS REMINDER OF OUR LUSTFUL DESIRES TO TRAVEL THE WORLD. EACH MAP HAS HAD A PREVIOUS LIFE OF ITS OWN, SEEN THROUGH EVERY TEAR, CREASE AND STAIN, ACTING AS A REMINDER OF ITS ONCE PRACTICAL USE. THEY ARE EMBLAZONED WITH BUONAGUIDI’S RECOGNISABLE NEON TYPOGRAPHY AND BOLD STATEMENTS, HIS WRY AND WITTY HUMOUR GIVING EACH MAP A NEW CONTEXT AND LEASE OF LIFE.
A lot of the screenprints that I create are printed onto existing vintage ephemera, like maps or photographs or other things that are flat enough to print onto, and as a result, each piece is different and unique, with a past life of its own.

‘MY WORK AIMS TO CAUSE A REACTION IN THE VIEWER, THE JUXTAPOSITION OF FAMILIAR IMAGES WITH OVERLAYING TEXT OR A SMATTERING OF CONTROVERSY OR THE ODD SWEAR WORD TO ACCENTUATE. THANKS TO MY BACKGROUND, I USE THE TECHNIQUES OF MASS COMMUNICATION AND ADVERTISING, PAIRING WITH FOUND IMAGERY AND OBJECTS AND ASSERTIVE TEXT THAT CHALLENGES THE VIEWER’ - DAVE BUONAGUIDI

Jealous' Interview with Dave Buonaguidi

Ahead of his solo show, we filmed a remote Q&A with the artist Dave Buonaguidi to delve a little deeper into his practice, the origin of his maps, and passion for Jaffa Cakes!

My work aims to cause a reaction in the viewer, the juxtaposition of familiar images with overlaying text or a smattering of controversy or the odd swear word to accentuate. Thanks to my background, I use the techniques of mass communication and advertising, pairing with found imagery and objects and assertive text that challenges the viewer.
