JEALOUS NORTH ARE PLEASED TO PRESENT A NEW BODY OF WORK BY ROWAN NEWTON

After an excellent opening at Jealous East, Jealous North is delighted to welcome Rowan Newton’s ‘Isolation: Self-Imposed’. In this exhibition, Newton reflects on how his artistic practice endures despite the social and personal impact of the pandemic. Ideas of isolation are explored through a range of bold oil paintings and portraiture.
This self-imposed isolation is an important part of Newton’s creative practice and the time he spends with his paintings, looking at them, reviewing them and refining them ultimately leads to the finished works on display today.
We can imagine ourselves as the subject or we can become an onlooker, imagining what the person in the painting is thinking or feeling.
Rowan Newton, June 2021
Newton encourages the viewers to create their own narrative for each painting and provides an opportunity for self-reflection. We can imagine ourselves as the subject; imagining what the person in the painting is thinking or feeling, or we can remain the onlooker.

Growing up in Brixton, Rowan developed an early fascination with an urban landscape constructed of graffiti and billboard advertisements. These gritty layers and textures continue to influence his work in the studio as he tirelessly works to blend them in new and conflicting ways. Rowan has been painting professionally since 2004
I want the viewer to look at something that they have seen a thousand times before, but experience it completely differently
