Born in Budapest and based in London, Eszter Karpati studied art history at Camberwell College of Art and design history at the Royal College of Art. In her collages, she uses original ephemera ranging from 18th-century botanical plates to communist stamps and early hand-finished postcards to create mischievous, arresting images that play with colour, scale and perspective. Eszter says of her work: “Even though I come from a theoretical background, for me making a collage is purely aesthetic. But I'm always aware that there is something unconscious at work, and once the piece is finished I enjoy exploring the meaning in the image in the same way as anyone else who is looking at it. I never try to tell a story in my collages, but there is always a story there.” As well as working as an artist, Eszter is an editor and has worked for publishers Thames & Hudson, Taschen and Booth-Clibborn Editions. Eszter’s work has been shown at the London Art Fair, the Original Print Fair and at the Royal Academy of Arts' Summer Exhibition.
