Revisiting one of the most significant periods in modern British Art, this retrospective will explore the work of the YBAs (Young British Artists). The YBAs exploded onto the British art scene in the 1990s, key figures such as Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Gavin Turk and Angus Fairhurst embraced pop culture, irreverant humour, vulgarity and shock tactics. Developing a DIY approach to making, showing and promoting their work the YBAs became artist-celebrities. Support from collectors and gallerists such as Charles Saatchi and Jay Jopling has established the YBAs as some of the most desirable, exciting (and expensive) artists working in Britain today.
Our retrospective will feature important work from all the major YBA artists, including an iconic spot print 'LSD' by Damien Hirst, delicately obscene etchings and screenprints by Tracey Emin, portraits by Jake and Dinos Chapman, a brand new silkscreen edition by Gavin Turk and photographic pieces by Sam Taylor-Wood and Sarah Lucas.
We will be curating the show to include key books and texts from our library, available to browse through in the gallery.[close]

The pricing of work will reflect the January ‘quest for a bargain’, however Jealous aims to combat the last season stock, knock down discounts and bargain buckets that typify the sales by showing brand new, high quality, original work whilst keeping all prices under £250.00. The show will run from the 8th to the 31st January, 2010.[close]

Jealous, along with sponsors John Jones and John Purcell are proud to present the inaugural winners of the Jealous Print Prize. The 2009 Graduate exhibition will showcase the talents of these five upcoming artists chosen by the gallery team from five premier London art schools. The selected winners are Andrew Curtis, MA Fine Art Printmaking, Royal College of Art, Adam Dix, MA Fine Art, Wimbledon School of Art, Erica Donovan, MA Fine Art Printmaking, Camberwell School of Art, Ian Gonczarow, MA Fine Art, Goldsmiths and Sarah Tse, BA Fine Art, Central Saint Martins.
The prize has given each artist the opportunity to create a screen-printed edition with the in-house print team. The prints have been made using fine art papers generously supplied by John Purcell Paper (www.johnpurcell.net). All five editions will be exhibited in the show, expertly framed by John Jones Framing (www.johnjones.co.uk), who are kindly sponsoring the show. Alongside these prints each artist will be displaying a selection of works from their graduate shows.
The artists chosen for the exhibition will showcase the diversity within graduate art practises and the strength of work that is being produced by London’s premier art colleges. Each prizewinner was selected from a huge pool of talent on each college course, making the selection process a very difficult task. Jealous believe the artists chosen have something special that needs to be exhibited and shown to a wider audience.
Andrew Curtis is a graduate of MA Fine Art Printmaking at The Royal College of Art. He produces images of suburban dissonance by blurring physical and psychological reality. Using our shared knowledge and preconceptions of suburbia, he questions contemporary notions of anomie, the abject and the exotic. Recurrent motifs such as the shadow or the Monkey Puzzle Tree, become anachronistic signs of cultural appropriation, darkening the tranquil streets of surburbia with echoes of British colonial activities during the 19th Century.
Adam Dix graduated from the MA Fine Art at Wimbledon School of Art. His on going body of work sets out to investigate the associations between technology and our need and fascination with it. Adam concentrates on the arena of telecommunications looking at its impact on society. Referencing publications like Time and Life magazine from the 1950’s and 60’s, Adam’s paintings represent “a visual language that emulated optimism for a future vision: a creation of a world where the human race would live in a technological utopia”. By morphing these faded dreams with our present aspirations, Adam produces a distorted and unsettling exploration of a paradoxical techno culture, in which we are both constantly connected by technology yet physically isolated from each other.
Erica Donovan is a graduate of MA Fine Art Printmaking at Camberwell School of Art. Erica primarily uses observations from everyday situations to explore changes that we face through social interaction and technology. Her work holds reference to various strands of the life cycle of a product from concept and production through to the consumer cycle of buying and selling. Erica’s work gives a playful twist to the everyday object.
Ian Gonczarow graduated from Goldsmiths with a MA in Fine Art. Currently working in London and Moscow, Ian’s work focuses on the examination and manipulation of the various representations and manifestations of political symbolism in popular culture. The huge gestural brush marks on his paintings, interplay with the heraldic insignia of world power politics and the iconic imagery of Manga comics and bucket shop kitsch. *
*Robert Clark 2009
Sarah Tse is a BA graduate from Fine Art at Central Saint Martins. Sarah’s beautifully intimate pencil drawings focus on scenes of nature as they corrupt delicate everyday objects. Typically 'cute', feminine imagery is juxtaposed with objects and architecture to create sensual and textural arrangements. Through these juxtapositions Sarah explores dreamscapes and identity, exposing a complex and intriguing inner world.

Fresh from outings to Vyner Street, Shoreditch and the Tate Modern, William Alexander's fully functioning cardboard ice cream van will be providing refreshment in Crouch End. Make sure you grab a handmade ice cream sculpture from the ice cream van man on his travels around Crouch End on Saturday July 18th, and come and see the blueprints, drawings and videos of the van on its travels at Jealous Gallery.
To become icecreamvanman William Alexander has designed and built his own icecreamvan from cardboard. It is powered by the artist from within, to make interventions into the spectacle of the everyday. By serving freshly made artist multiples from the van, icecreamvanman spreads a joyfilled art viewing and buying experience. The buyer pays to witness the performance of it being served, for the memory of receiving and for a live object to take home.
The freshly made ice cream sculpture is not edible but it is remarkably tempting, hence creating a paradox for the viewer/consumer. Though it cannot be tasted it can also never be finished.
The design of the van is based on a 1960s model. Production of the van has taken an essentially fordist object which itself has been modified once to turn it from motor car to ice cream van and taken it back a further step towards the handcraft of pre fordist production.
This piece explores our small pleasures and disappointments, it is art about the art object in everyday life. [close]

Jealous is pleased to present PhotoBooth, a survey of contemporary photography practice. Works on show range in genre from documentary, portraiture and still life to participant observer and multiple exposure projects. Our selection of works have been executed using both traditional film and digital processes, and demonstrate many different methods of photographic printing from photogravure to lambda. PhotoBooth will include iconic work by internationally acclaimed photographer Martin Parr, the latest photographic edition from British artist Sam Taylor-Wood, a collection of photographic work by contemporary artists Cornelia Parker, Brad Lochore, Tacita Dean and Anya Gallaccio from the ‘Bugs’ portfolio and new work by emerging artists Kit Oates, Razvan Anton and Ashes57. Additionally photographer Anthony Carr will be installing a long exposure pinhole camera focusing on Crouch End’s central Clock Tower. His hand made camera will create an image using a single negative, exposed constantly over the month leading up to the show. Unlike conventional methods of photography, in which the aim is to capture a subject, the final photograph produced will retain only ghostly traces of activity around the constant point of the Clock Tower.

‘Jealous Editions’ March 19th – April 12th 2009
In March, Jealous Gallery and Print Studio will be six months old. To celebrate this, we will be presenting a mini retrospective of all our editions produced in the print studio since the gallery opened its doors in Crouch End last October.
The first six months have been an exciting time for us in this new space. As well as finding our feet in the gallery world, we have been busy building a portfolio of prints under the Jealous label. Many emerging and internationally recognised artists have walked through our doors to work with Matthew Rich, our in-house printer, producing beautiful hand pulled screen printed editions.
The Jealous Editions Show will act as a documentation of our development and work so far as we move forward to establish our place as one of the highest quality water based screen print studios in England.
The show will also mark the beginning of a busy and exciting period for the gallery and print studio. Jealous has a full programme of exhibitions planned for the rest of 2009, notably Eurovision, a show of European print works and a photographic show called Photobooth.
Jealous will also be holding The Jealous Print Prize in the summer. This new screen printing award will recognise excellence in contemporary printmaking for the MA graduates of some of London most highly respected colleges including the Royal College of Art and Camberwell. Jealous will be inviting the artists selected to work in our studio and to produce a Jealous edition with Matthew Rich. The resulting editions and other works by MA students will be exhibited together in a graduate show later this year. John Jones is the main sponsor of the show and will be providing their finest quality museum standard frames for the prize winners.
All our artists, from our very first Jealous print created by Michael Palmieri, to the latest works by Angie Lewin and Ceal Warnants will be on show. Other featured artists will include Ashes 57, James Flames, Adam Bridgland, Lucy Gough, Jeni Snell, Eddie King, Anka Dabrowska, Adam Koukoudakis, Samson Kambalu, Mighty Monkey, Razvan Anton, Chris Ould, T*WAT, Bert, Mike Marcus, Olivier Kosta Thefaine and Jealous INC.
Many of our editions are coming to the end of their run, so the show may well be the last chance to get your hands on these limited works before they sell out.

‘Sketchshow’ February 19th – March 16th 2009
Jealous Gallery is proud to present the exhibition ‘Sketchshow’, bringing together a number of the most exciting artists working in the drawn medium today. The gallery will be exhibiting new drawings and prints by Steven Gregory, Francis Richardson, Lloyd Durling, Razvan Anton, Chris Ould, Jayoon Choi, Liz Charsley-Jory, Jack Kettlewell, Kwai Lau, Anka Dabrowska, Jeni Snell, Greg Derham, John Bolton, Glen Williams, Ceal Warnants, Angie Lewin and Giulia Resteghini to name a few. All are emerging artists that are fast growing in reputation within the art world.
At Jealous we do not believe in the barriers and tags that mean the various artistic mediums are separated. We look to create interesting dialogues and relationships between the mediums. In this show we will be exploring a number of relationships, for example the original drawing and printmaking and the drawn mark within a printed work and that directly onto a piece of paper.
For the show Jealous have commissioned four new printed editions, all produced in house at our print studio. The editions have been created by Razvan Anton, Chris Ould, Ceal Warnants and Angie Lewin. We wanted to use a range of drawing and print techniques and the four artists we have chosen have very different approaches to the medium. Razvan Anton makes dominating graphite works of industrial objects, Chris Ould draws directly from photographs on the computer to create new visions of crime scenes and Ceal Warnants tampers with book illustrations from a bygone era to create miscued versions of reality. Our final edition is by Angie Lewin who creates stylized works of the natural environment, particularly of Norfolk and the Cairngorms, where she spends much of her time. Although Angie has produced many woodcuts and lithographs, she has not worked with screen print and Jealous are delighted to be producing her first one in the studio.

Ben is currently a first year student at Central St Martins, where his practice is focussed on 2D work. Jealous is very pleased to be showing his most recent project, a large scale oil portrait of Barack Obama, on Inauguration Day, Tuesday January 20th.
Ben's portrait of the new American president has provoked an astonishing and very positive reaction from the public during its travels around North London. The story of the making of the painting and an account of the public response it has tapped into will be featured in the Guardian section G2 on Monday 19th January.
Ben works in thin oil paint on canvas. He was attracted by Obama’s face, the openess, the honesty, the direct look. Ben says he painted Obama in blue “because I saw it as a blueprint of something big that was about to happen. When I think of Obama, I think of the usual stuff- hope, love...we've been waiting so long for this day to happen.” He paints directly in squares without graphical aids such as projection equipment, resizing his images using grids and drawing by eye. The remnants of the grid in Ben's work indicate his working practice and reveal the painterly, gestural quality of his work. Ben draws inspiration from Chuck Close.

blockhouse is a multi-media installation by Anka Dabrowska and Jeni Snell. Exploring themes of memory, location and childhood, the installation is playful, beautiful and unsettling.
Anka reinscribes the Eastern Bloc architecture, street signs, shop fronts and military paraphernalia of her past in Warsaw onto found packaging such as paper bags and champagne boxes collected in London. Her delicate line drawings and cardboard architectural models combine unlikely sites and sources; communist and consumerist, private and public, past and present, memory and archive.
Jeni will be presenting an ongoing installation called MIRUS which is a modular assemblage of flat interlocking plywood pieces which Jeni describes as “like giant Playplax pieces”. Playplax was a late-1960’s child’s-building-toy which evoked the imagination of a nation to construct fabulous fantasy cities. Jeni made MIRUS as an adult-sized version of this. In its recent incarnation at the Delfina Foundation visitors to the gallery were invited to ‘revert back into a state of play’ by building and decorating the structure with an array of paint, foam, tape and mark-making implements using imagery associated with military buildings. Desert camouflage netting was also used to transform the gallery space into a series of improvised tunnels and dens. This brought together the contrasting ideologies of child’s play and military warfare to reference Jeni’s personal experience of play amongst redundant military buildings in Guernsey as well as the stark reality of children today playing in war zones during current conflict. Exploring the themes of children’s games such as ‘building and construction’, ‘hide and seek’ and through activities like ‘drawing, painting, tracing and colouring-in’, the work aims to explore the potentiality of play as a political gesture.
Both artists will also be producing a limited edition screenprint print to coincide with the show, made and published by the Jealous Print Studio.

Will they be worth more in a year or two ? I hope so. Neate is one of the rising stars of British art with canvases going between fifteen thousand and forty four thousand pounds at the Bonhams auction earlier in the year. Will they be worth more or less in a year or two?...I'll tell you in a couple of years![close]

'for the first time more than half the world's population, or about 3.3 billion people, will live in cities, a number expected to swell to almost 5 billion by 2030', United Nations Population report.
Exploring the growing anomie in large urban centres Isolitude is a haunting and thought provoking piece.
Set against an ambient late night urban soundscape by Amy Slavin, Mike Marcus places large scale cut out sculptures in the gallery space for you to navigate around.
In conjunction to this installation, large scale paste ups of the figure will be going up on the streets on New York and Paris.
