Lars Birk

MA Chelsea Lars Birk was born and grew up in Denmark, now living and working between Copenhagen and London. He studied MA Fine Art at Chelsea, and recently presented a comprehensive solo exhibition at the Royal Danish Embassy in London. Lars focuses his practice on painting. He is interested in energy, conciousness and awareness and how they relate to form and solid matter. In his own words, “a magical flow runs through everything. The surface of things is not the truth of things. The real magic is in the energy that everything is made of...inside the atoms of rocks, humans, birds...a spirtual energy that connects everything. It is the space that Einstein points to, when he says that empty space isn’t empty.” Lars’ print for the Jealous prize is an 9 colour screenprint on Saunders Waterford Paper, the central image, a book, seems to float in the space. Words, repeated and inverted spill from its pages. The book, with it’s evocative title ‘Le Mystere’ becomes a metaphor, for the collection of ideas, their dissemination and the energy of words and ideas. Lars’ Jealous Prize print edition is now held in the Victoria & Albert Museum Permanent Print Collection.
