Gary Hume

A leading figure of British artists who emerged in the 1990s in London, Gary Hume is best known for his abstract and figurative works painted in striking gloss colour combinations on aluminium panels; bold paints which were often sourced premixed from hardware stores. His portfolio of works drew quick attention through numerous exhibitions after graduating from Goldsmith College in 1988, including ‘Freeze’ organized by Damian Hirst on graduation, and ‘East Country Yard’ show in a warehouse put together by Henry Bond and Sarah Lucas in 1990. Shortly after in 1992, Hume had his first solo exhibition in the United States at Matthew Marks Gallery, which showed his most recognised door paintings. In 1995, his work was included in the YBA artists’ showcase ‘Brilliant!’, after which he represented Britain at the Bienal de São Paulo in 1996 and Venice Biennale in 1999. His success reached new heights when he was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1996, consequently his work going onto be part of Charles Saatchi’s touring collection at the Royal Academy in London. The Whitechapel Gallery showed Hume’s work as his oneperson show in 1999, and he was elected to the Royal Accademy in 2001. International interest in Hume’s skills took him to Hannover and Austria in 2004, where his Monographic works gathered spotlight in shows at the Kestnergesellschaft and Kunsthaus Bregenz respectively. In 2008 his door paintings where presented by Modern Art Oxford in their survey show, and in 2013 Hume was made focus of Tate Britain’s survey presentation exploring the breadth and subject matters of his works throughout his career. Continuing to excel as a key international artist as a painter, draughtsman and printmaker, Hume currently lives and works in London and Accord, New York.
