Charlie’s practice works to both celebrate and question painting and it’s heritage. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of historical and satirical influences through a range of subjects, 18th and early 19th century motifs feature throughout his work, specifically the work of caricaturists Cruikshank and Gillray. Regency britches, wigs and waistcoats are repeated, flipped and cropped in arrays of decorative colours and finishes. It is through this repetition that the past becoming detached from our consciousness, becoming a disconnected period, a sequence of changing décor and tastes.
