Charming Baker
Charming Baker lives and works in London, a graduate of Central St Martins, he paints in oil on canvas, linen, wood and paper, and creates sculptural work cast in bronze and aluminium.
His most recent work, ‘Triumph In The face of Absurdity’ a sculpture in collaboration with fashion legend Sir Paul Smith, is currently on show at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The piece is an aluminium cast of a carbon track bike balancing on its front wheel, held up by a mouse. It’s part of the 'London 2012: Britain Creates' project which celebrates the year of London hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
His last shows at Mercer Street Studios, London and in New York at the NY Studio Gallery sold out before opening, with prestigious buyers including Damien Hirst, Frank Cohen and Alberto Mugrabi. Recently signed to a top music management company he has been tipped for greatness on BBC London News, in the Daily Telegraph, Evening Standard and Elle and GQ magazines. With sell out shows at the Carmichael Gallery in L.A. and Signal, Truman Brewery and Redchurch Street Galleries in London behind him, Charming Baker is gaining profile day by day.
Damien Hirst says of Baker’s work; “It’s hard to say exactly what makes a painting great… Its flatness and its depth, its ease and its complexity, a kind of preciousness that’s also kind of throwaway, a risk factor. Who gives a damn? Charming Baker’s paintings are great.”

Live Everyday Like Your Hair is On Fire is a 10 Colour screenprint on 6mm Birch Ply. The print is made up of a 4 colour CMYK screenprint base with many overlaid marks and gestures made by the artist directly onto the films and screenprinted to enhance the sense of movement and dynamism in the central image. The birch ply was then laser cut to remove the grid of holes that interrupts the image. The Baker stamp and Jealous Studio stamp were then laser etched into the wood before signing and numbering in pencil. Although still a limited edition of 35 with 5 AP's this piece feels a little bit more special than a standard print.
We have commissioned a unique, 8 cm deep, custom made box frame from John Jones in American Walnut to hold the print, which will be floated inside to allow light and shade to fall through the cut holes in the surface.

NoteSo Who Are The Glorious Dead Anyway? is an intense and striking image, a digitally printed central image of a running cow is overlaid with red, grey and lascaux gold screenprinted marks, drawn by the artist onto the screens used to print.
The background of the print is a three colour screenprint made up of a deep black layer overlaid with gold and charcoal layers. The print is one of our largest prints to date, measuring 126 cm high x 100 cm wide and will be released in an edition of 60 with 5 Artist's Proofs.
The print will be exhibited and sold in a custom made museum frame by John Jones. The moulding used will be a handmade 'Bacon Section' with an inlaid gold strip and a 12 ply white window mount to contain the print. Developed for Francis Bacon the frame suits the darkness and dramatic mood of the print perfectly.
The print will be available at £2600 + VAT including the framing detailed above. As the print is so large we will also be able to offer a box framed option with a more minimal aesthetic, also by John Jones, at £2300 + VAT.
